In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Allah, the Exalted, says in His mighty book:
وَإذَا
سَـأَلكَ
عِــبَادِي
عَنِّي فَإنِّي
قَريْبٌ
أجِيبُ
دَعْوَةَ
الدَّاعِ
إذَا دَعَانِ
فليَسْـتجِـيبُوا
لِي
وَليُؤمِنـُوا
بِي
لَعَلَّهُم
يَرْشُـدُونْ
And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way (2:186).
In a hadith related by Tirmidhi, an-Nu‘man bin Bashir says: I heard the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, say upon the minbar, “Du‘a is worship,” then he read the ayat:
وَقالَ
رَبُّكمْ
ادْعُونِي
اسْتجِبْ
لَكـُـم إنَّ
الذِينَ
يَسْتكبِرُونَ
عَنْ عِبادَتِي
سَيَدْخُلونَ
جَهَنَّمَ
دَاخِريْنْ
And your Lord says: Call upon Me, I will answer you; surely those who are too proud for My service shall soon enter hell abased (40:60).
The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “There is nothing more honored by Allah than du‘a.”
He, upon him be blessings and peace, said, “Don’t be weak in the performance of du‘a, for surely the one who makes du‘a will not perish.” He also said, “Du‘a is the core of ‘ibada, and the core of something is the pure thing itself.”
Tirmidhi relates that the Messenger of Allah, Allah grant him blessings and peace, said, “Call upon Allah certain that you will receive an answer. And know that Allah does not answer the heart that is in ghaflah.”
In the riwayas of Bukhari and Muslim it is related that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said, “He will answer all of you. But as for the one who is in a hurry, he will say, ‘I asked, but He did not respond to me.’”
The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said, “Whoever has the door of du‘a opened for him, has the doors of rahmah opened for him. And of those things which are asked of Allah, there is nothing more beloved to Him than ‘afiya (well-being).”
Making du‘a is benefitial, whether the du‘a is from the Qur’an or not; therefore, it is an obligation upon you, O servants of Allah. The hadiths and ayats mentioned here indicate the exaltedness of making du‘a, taking one’s needs to Allah, and seeking His assistance. The best du‘a is made with a truthful tongue, a faithful heart, and sincerity in betaking oneself to Allah (sidq). The best way to ask Allah is by His names and attributes (i.e., through His Ninety-Nine Names). Allah, the Exalted, says:
ولله الأسماء الحسنى فادعـوه بها
And Allah’s are the best names, therefore call on Him thereby (7:180).
Du‘a has its secrets, its wisdoms, its rules, and its times—when it is best to perform it and when it will be answered. Among the best times to make du‘a are when Muslims gather, at sessions of dhikr, when finishing the Qur’an, when praying for a brother who is absent, after finishing wudu’, between the adhan and the iqamah, at dawn, at the Friday prayer, when it is raining, and when a severe punishment, prescribed by Allah, is exacted.
Among the best days in which du‘a should be made are the day of ‘Arafat, the day of ‘Ashura’, the nights of the two ‘Ids, the night of mid-Sha‘ban, the night of Asra’ wa al-Mi‘raj, and the night of the Mawlid of the Prophet.
For the believer, however, any time is good to make a du‘a. It may be made silently or out loud, but, most importantly, the traditions indicate that Allah loves the du’a of the one who is persistent.
Du‘a has its courtesy and its conditions. Among the conditions that must be met are that the supplicant possess inner piety, a good niyah, sincerity, and a livelihood earned by halal means. Allah, the Exalted, says:
فادعوا الله مخلصـين له الدين
Therefore call upon Allah, being sincere to Him in obedience (40:14).
In addition, the supplicant’s heart should be present with Allah. In a hadith, the Messenger of Allah, said, “Surely Allah, the Exalted, doesn’t answer the supplication of the servant whose heart is distracted and busy with other than Him.” Rather, the supplicant should be completely present with, and submissive to, Allah. Another condition is that the du‘a not be made while the supplicant is in heedlessness, persisting in disobedience. It has been related that the Prophet, Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The most foolish of men is he who, though desiring tawbah, persists in disobedience.”
Among the courtesies accompanying the performance of a du‘a is that the supplicant begin by praising and thanking Allah, then blessing His messenger, Muhammad, Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, then admitting the injustice that he has committed against himself, followed by a sincere desire to make tawbah, with the inclusion of all Muslims. Then, absorbed in the du‘a and in asking, the supplicant should mention all his needs and hopes. Allah, may He be praised, will give him. He supplicates to Allah according to the good that is inspired within him.
The supplicant should be in tahara (a state of purity), present in heart and mind, and facing the qibla, though in whatever direction the believer faces, there is Allah’s face. Then he begins by raising his hands. Abu Huraira said,
The Prophet went out to a district of Madinah and I followed him. He stood in the direction of the qibla and raised his hands above his shoulders so that I could see the white of his sides saying, “O Allah, Ibrahim, Your prophet and Your friend, made du‘a for the people of Makkah; and I, Your prophet and Your messenger, make du‘a for the people of Madinah. O Allah, bless their mudd and their sa‘ (i.e., their food), whether it be little or much, and make it twice the blessing You bestowed upon the people of Makkah.” Then he said, “O Allah, from here and there,” pointing in every direction of the Earth, “O Allah, anyone who intends to harm them, let him dissolve like salt in water.”
It has been narrated that when the Prophet made du‘a he would make it three times; and when he asked, he would ask three to seven times. He would ask Allah by His prophets and righteous servants (tawassul), in a low voice, never raising his eyes to the sky. By example, Allah says: When he (Zakariya) called upon his Lord in a low voice (19:3). After making his du‘a, he would wipe his noble face with his hands. The Prophet said, “When you finish, wipe your faces.” Wiping the hands over the face provides encouragement and reassurance. It is as if you are saying, “Look! My hands are full of heavenly barakat.” Thus, the ni‘ma (divine blessing) flows over the face, which is the first part of the body to receive karama. This has been reported in the book al-Husn al-Hasin.
In a sound hadith it is reported that when the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, heard the people making a loud and noisy du‘a he said, “Be gentle with yourselves, for surely you are not making munajat (secret and intimate conversation) with One who is deaf or absent. The One that you are calling upon is closer to you than the neck of your mounts.” Some of the salaf (predecessors) said that a du‘a made secretly is better than 70 made out loud.
The following are du‘as that may be made in the morning.
Glory be to the Breaker of the Dawn! Glory be to the Lord of the evening and the morning! Glory be to the One who is worshipped by those on Earth and in Heaven. Glory be to Allah and praise belongs to Allah. There is no god except Allah. Allah is the greatest. There is no power and no strength except by Allah, the Exalted, the Great. O Allah, to You belongs the praise forever, with every blink of the eye and every breath.
اللهــــمَّ لكَ الحمــدُ كـما يـــَـنبـــغِي لجــَــلالِ وجــهِك وعــظيم سُـــلطـانـِـك .
O Allah, to You belongs the praise as it should be to the nobleness of Your face and the greatness of Your authority.

We wake in the morning and now the kingdom of the world is for Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. While we are in the evening, the kingdom of the world is also for Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne. O Allah, in the morning we are with You, and in the evening we are with You, and by You we live and by You we die, and to You we are gathered. O Allah, make our morning that of the saliheen, and our evening that of the saliheen. O Allah, make right and proper the beginning of this day of our’s, make its middle favorable, and its end successful, O Merciful, O Compassionate.

In the name of Allah for my wealth and children. In the name of Allah for everything that my Lord has given me. There is no god except Allah, alone without partner. To Him belongs the mulk and to Him belongs the praise. He gives life and causes death and He is over all things able. Allah is enough for me. There is no god except Him. Upon Him I rely and to Him I turn repentant. O Allah, by You I lie on my side and by You I rise. O Allah, to You I submit myself and in You I have faith. There is no god except You. I take refuge in Allah, the Hearing, the Knowing, from the Shaytan, the accursed. O Allah, surely in You I take refuge from following the footsteps of shayatin, and I take refuge with You, my Lord, from their coming. I take refuge with Allah’s perfect words from the evil of everything that causes harm. You, O my Master, take hold of its forelock. There is no strength or power except with Allah, the Exalted, the Great.
